head removal?
« on: January 07, 2008, 01:26:15 am »
I'm pulling apart a 1.6TD to get it ready for rebuild.

Is there a particular order to pull the  torx head bolts out so that won't warp the head? (if it even matters for dis-assembly)

If there is could someone post the order (no manual yet, otherwise I would have simply pulled them out in reverse order without asking...)

It looks like my motor had been dusted out as there is sand in the intake. I'm not sure what this is going to hold for me as I get further into this thing. It also doesn't look like it had been pulled apart all that long ago either.... Neither the intake or exhaust gaskets had set themselves to the head. All they did was fall away very easly when I removed the intake manifold.

There sure it.
Kind of hard to explain.

I would suggest, if you are doing this big of a job, you should get a manual.

Someone will chime in on this topic.

1984 Rabbit - Daily driver smoke machine - Can't complain about 23 year old technology that gets 45 MPG.

A Bentley manual for either an '80s Quantum/Passat or a late '80s Rabbit/Jetta would be an excellent addition to your library. I'd suggest the Quantum, it's longitudinal mounting specific and it looks like this is going in a Samurai... that's longitudinal, right?

As I understand the diagram (and just looked at it yesterday) you want to start at the outermost bolts and work your way inward, swapping sides front/back and left/right in a diagonal each time you remove a bolt.

Not the best explanation, but it is 4AM here...

[edit] Also, those aren't Torx bolts... they're either 6-point allen or triple-square.

It's the opposite way that you would intall then. 1/4 turn at a time until they are loose. So yeah, basically outside to middle alternating sides
