help identifying new squeal after tbelt/ ip installation
« on: January 05, 2008, 02:49:06 pm »
Just replaced ip (with resealed, used ip), tbelt, tensioner, alt. and waterpump belts.  Locked cam and ip and timed with dial indicator.  this is a 1.6td quantum engine..

started it up and drove a bit (to get air out of fuel lines), started noticing loud squeal/ squeak that seems to be happening about 1 time per engine revolution.  reving the engine makes it slightly louder, it never goes away.  tbelt doesn't look to be rubbing, wearing oddly/ etc

pulled alternator belt, and (just for a second) water pump belt and squeal persists, so these are not to blame...

I can't narrow down where noise is coming from using piece of hose to my ear as a stethoscope...

tensioner is new, tbelt tension feels correct.  I am stumped as to what might be making this noise...?

could it somehow be coming from the ip it's self?  this pump was used, with just one of the seals replaced, not fully rebuilt, from an unknown source...

is there any way that the ip could be making noises internally?

could I somehow be one tooth off with the tbelt timing (engine rotated by hand, nothing bad happened)?

what would bad valve/s or valve hitting sound like?

anything to check for that the tbelt itself could be rubbing/ etc?

anything internally in the engine that could be making this noise?

What steps would you suggest to narrow down what is causing this noise.

any advice very greatly appreciated...

thank you!
Greg

for every 2 engine revolutions the pump turns once.  maybe try turning it over by hand to get a better idea?  maybe its the t-belt roller? is it a high pitch noise or more of a squeal? high pitch is usually metal on metal and squeal is the rubber belt rubbing on something.

if the condition of the pump is unknown you really have no way of knowing unless you were to put the old pump back on... which would be a PITA, but would help diagnose the problem.

On the old gassers (and diesel too), if you over-tightened the belt, the tensioner would squeal. How tight is it? Should be about 45-50 degrees of twist to the belt. Any less, and the tensioner might squeal.

Is the timing cover on when the squealing starts? If so, the cover might be slightly cockeyed. Another possibility, if it's making the noise with the cover on, is the IP input shaft is bent, and is rubbing against the timing cover (front or rear).

feel the pullies if any are getting hot then most likly the belts too tight or too loose and slipping..

I put a new water pump on and when i installed the belt i had it too loose and its squeeled like a....

made me think the alt bearing was fried... Those water pump belts are PITA to adjust sometimes

top tbelt cover is off, bottom is on...

only belt not removed to test is the tbelt, it is not either of the acc. belts making the noises...  tbelt doesn't get overly hot or look to be wearing badly

I will try to turn over by hand today...

sounds to me possibly more like metal on metal squeak as opposed to belt squeal, but ?

tension on tbelt seems correct to me, can turn to 45 degrees fairly easily, can almost turn to 90 degress w/ lots of force...

tensioner is new but I guess that doesn't totally rule it out.

ip input shaft looks straight to me (no wabble on pulley gear)

any more tips?

THANK YOU!

Do you have the metal plate between the belt and block? Mine was rubbing on the timing gear a little. I was able to bend it back towards the engine and fix it.
