Either the damper isn't seated properly all the way around or it's warped.  Definitely NOT supposed to be like this.  You'll want to replace it as soon as possible.

I ordered a TDI crank timing gear with flat, from Jack, using the number given (028 105 263E ) and ended up with the old style timing gear.
 Are you sure that's the right number?
 What's the number for the old lame little key timing gear?

I rechecked the part number and I was wrong, I apologize. I must have assumed that the the higher the letter suffix, the newer the gear. This is not the case. The TDI gear is 028 105 263D.  I have edited my previous post to correct the error. Again, I apologize. :(

No problem, I'll use it on a NA diesel and it'll be awhile before I have the crank out.
