Can a 1.6 TD Injection Pump & Mounting Bracket work on a
« on: January 04, 2008, 10:07:02 am »
I have an opportunity to buy a 1.9L (non-tdi) Turbo Diesel Long Block and want to know if I can use my 1.6L TD Injectors, Fuel Lines, TD Injector Pump w/Pulley and Injector Pump mounting bracket on it and have it run just like the 1.6L? Or is the 1.9L Non-TDI parts I mentioned different and have to come from a 1.9L? Thanks

Everything fits but you need the fuel lines from a 1.9 because the 1.9 block is taller.

I use a 1.6 TD IP/and pulley and bracket and  it works really great.

So do you think I could buy new lines from a Canadian VW Dealer? I compared the price to rebuild a 1.6l to getting a good 1.9l and I like the idea of the larger size just didn't know if the 1.6l parts would work on the 1.9l as here in the USA we never got the Non-TDI 1.9l's. So the missing pieces I need to make the 1.9l run are sort of rare here. Thanks

How much taller is the block, because the 1.9 injectors are taller. If he is using 1.6 injectors, the lines still won't be right.

OK, so I will want to look for a set of 1.9L Turbo Injectors as well as the lines, right? So I don't have fittment issues. OK, So is there a difference between the 1.6 TD Pump and the 1.9 TD Pump? I am just preparing a plan and what to see if it is worth the effort. Thanks

just remember not to bend the injector lines too much... you won't get a good seal and the nut may crack while tightening.

for some reason i just don't see this working without heavy modifications... i tried putting a 1.9 pump on my 1.6 but gave up after nothing seemed to fit right.

Itīs pretty easy the other way around. A 1.6 TD IP on a 1.9 engine non TDI.  But if you were to use a 1.9 IP on a 1.6 engine the 1.6 IP bracket is also a part of the engine mount and looks completely different. Itīs made of a much thinner pressed steel plate (not like the cast iron 1.9 bracket), so the IP sprocket is way out of alignment if you donīt machine it. But a 1.6 IP bolts up to to the 1.9 with a 1.9 bracket.

And I canīt recall the injectors being taller on the 1.9 NON TDI engines such as the AAZ etc but the injectors on the TDI (1Z etc) is the taller type.

But thoose engines also have another head and pistons.

So I think youīll be fine with another set of injection lines.

OK, so I should just look for everything from a 1.9L then?

Just the IP bracket and the injection lines. Sorry for the incorrect info in my other post. I totally forgot about the bracket.

OM617 put up a good pic of one of my old 1.9 injectors at the end of his post. You can see they are taller than the 1.6 as they are dual spring.

Everything will bolt up except the lines. They need to be 1.9l lines. The head is taller too.

The controversy in the pump is merely the pulley. You will nee dthe pulley that matches the pump. I.E. 1.6l pulley with 1.6l pump and vise-versa. Pulley offset is different between the two but they will line  up. I have installed them both ways.
