Hello all,

I run a mk2 8v gti which recently popped its block. At present i replaced the 1.8 with a 1.6 na diesel engine and although i am starting to enjoy the excessive fuel economy this engine offers I thought its time to put something bigger and with forced induction on... so i got myself a 1.9D turbo - AAZ - in hopes of restoring some power to my golf which at present is being overtaken by ummmm everything...

My background on diesels
I started appreciating diesels a long time ago and have recently converted my brother's mk3 Ford Capri using a mondeo 90bhp idi unit. At present its fitted with an AAZ diesel pump, lancia delta intercooler, a T2.5 turbo with 360 bearing and some other stuff in... and needless to say it now pulls like a train, throwing shame over the 1.8 zetec -130 bhp- it previously had plumbed in. Spinns 215/50 R15 wheels in 2nd gear and had to fit n LSD unit to the back because it chewed 2 standard diffs...

On a more sluggish note... the 1.6 diesel on the golf i'm running is a home assembled engine built from 4 discarded engines... Put in 1.6TD rings running in a perfect bore, and was a complete rebuild including the pump so works like a clock. It has
- gti flywheel from the old engine
- 2 into 1 exhaust kept from the gti,
- some pump mods, new injectors
- gti gearbox which has close ratios and a low final drive which makes it accelerate quite well till it reaches 90-ish mph where the engine just can't revv any more.

not a bad engine but with no replacement for displacement i think its time for the 1.9... However, since it will be used as a daily runner for short distance driving i want to be carefull about what mods and what not mods will i be putting on it.

Sounds like a good project. Do you have any pictures of the Capri conversion or of your golf?

I had mine fitted with an LS1 engine off a vette, ran it with Megasquirt management... 450 bhp and weighing in at just 1060 kgs! was quite impressive! but insurance was too high as was road tax/liscence so had to sell it    right now its somwhere in Italy. Next one i'll be buying (if i ever do) i'll do up with a supercharged 2.3L 16v duratec engine...

What parts of the engine does the insurer look at to adjust your rate? horsepower? displacement? forced induction?

Over here forced induction adds a slight percentage but displacement kills you off ... Also some models require various no-claim bonus years to be elegible to be insured to drive them such as huge engined mercs which pop to mind. Other models you may not be insured on unless you're 25 years of age...

Did not have any problems, maybe because it is a late model, i.e.1986 MK3 1.6 LS (1.8 TD now  :P  )
