mk1 oil cooler help needed
« on: December 29, 2007, 12:11:02 am »
I'm going to the salvage yard tomorrow and would like to pick up an oil/air oil cooler.  I'll need the piece that attaches to the oil filter housing, hoses, and cooler.  I was told the Volvo setups are bolt-on.  Does anybody know the Volvo models and years that directly bolt oto an 81 rabbit diesel.  Thanks in advance.   :D

The Volvo 740 and 760 turbo models. Take everything between the oil filter and the block, the lines and the cooler. It works very well. Take a large adjustable wrench. Take a trash bag to keep it from leaking on/in your car.  8)

And you'll need a 29mm socket to remove the oil cooler from the oil filter flange.

Skip the used cooler for the following reasons.

1.  The hoses to the cooler from Vw are 75 bucks for one and 20 bucks for the other and I couldn't find them new anywhere else. (a new cooler from the dealer was over 200 but I found one from Vwdieselparts.com for 75)

2.  Potential for oil to antifreeze or antifreeze to oil leaks.

3.  Used cooler could have contamination and it could pass into your engine.

I just bought a new cooler and hoses for a engine rebuild for reasons 2 and 3.  I have major buyers remorse for reason #1 and I wish I would have done something like this.....

Yeah I know.... took my 27 to the junkyard all excited to get an oil cooler and  it was just a bit too small... 29mm was a perfect fit.

At least the model Volvo I was working on... some people have been able to get a big Crecent wrench in there but twice now I've needed the big socket.

I believe the OP is referring to the air-powered oil-cooler found on turbo Volvos... a sandwich plate just like the eBay one (except with proper thermostatic control) and an oil radiator that bolts up front.  No coolant involved, and the hoses can come from any hydraulic shop.

Thanks for all the info.  Looks like I'll start my junk yard search as soon as the weather breaks.
