N/A diesel hard to start in the cold...
« on: January 03, 2008, 09:20:42 am »
I'm baaack, bought another diesel (after my turbo aba was starting to suck up too much gas, 200HP is fun, but 300kms to the tank isnt)

and i know it will be hard to start in the cold, but i'm killing my battery trying to do so, i've let my glow plugs cycle 2-3 times over, but it doesnt do the trick, and they are supposed to be new (i havent checked though) Do you guys have any tricks or add ons to help cold starts?

thanks,
Jeff

My last NA (86 with 325k km) started right up no matter what the temps.  It had recent glow plugs prior to my purchasing it and the cold start lever worked properly.   My current NA (91 with ~200k km on the engine) is much more difficult to start.  I don't have any history on the glow plugs, but I know the cold start is not properly adjusted.

see i've found to start it at about -5*C i have to have the cold start pushed IN, pedal the throttle, then when it fires up pull it out.

if i try to start it with the cold start out, theres no hope in hell... and my first one was never like that, so i guess that may need to be adjusted.

How do i go about doing that? the idle does rev up though when its pulled up

If its hopeless by pulling out the cold start - You have maladjusted pump timing and the idling speed lever is also pushing on the Advance cam.

My car was the same until the time I adjusted the pump timing, now it starts on first key, and puliing out the CSA lever actually helps

Just as precautions, add a ground to the starterbolt itself and the cylinder head, the GPs also require a ground to operate properly.

You basically just set the timing with the cold start in the proper position (pushed in I believe)

I like to set my cars at 1.00mm advance.

If you don't know the condition of the timing belt it's easiest to do the belt and glow plugs together because you can just take the pump right off. Makes life a lot easier.
