I wonder what it does.

Does anyone know what the small sillinoid looking thing between the injection pump and alternator does?  I am just wondering.

To be more specific, it is mounted directly in front of the injection pump, and has one small line bolted to the pump to the right of where the fuel enters from the filter.  It has one wire conected to it.  I belive it is red (the wire)  I am just wondering what it does.

I figure you a 1.9 engine. If it's the case, solenoid you are refering to is anti-polution device wich ajust injection timing (or volume -- not shure) according to engine revolution.

IF it is what you are refering to, it can be bypassed (continuous 12V through stop solenoid) to increase performance and fuel economy).

See with VWQ's Smog pump adjustment which you should be able to find here on VWdiesel.net.

Sorry : if it is a 1.6, then you lost me -- I do not have a clue about what it could be.

Maybe a picture would help.

:?: Purely a guess but it sounds like an automatic choke similar t oone my father has on his Citroen.  Or is it a fuel preheater too :?:

looks to me like its a timing retard device. it only gets power when its cold. when the engine warms up the +12v goes away
