should i go through the trouble?
« on: December 30, 2007, 03:49:17 pm »
my 1990 transporter has the KY 1.7 l diesel in it, basically a bored and stroked 1.6.  I was going to drop in an AHU or ALH , m-pump it, etc. I can get a long block cheap so it's not a matter of money but i don't have tons of time to play around with. I guess what i'm trying to say is, is it worth my time to change the whole block or should i just turbo, nozzle and intercooler my 1.7 or will there be a real big difference. I do know the tdi's are much more cleaner and efficient, but ...    I'm not looking for tons more power if for no other reason than the fact that my truck is as high as a syncro so handling is a bit of an issue; don't want to get in over my head!

There might be a few people on this forum with an interest in your 1.7.  Perhaps you  should pull it, sell or swap it for a AAZ or TDI.  I know Dave at PP has a interest in the 1.7.

Get in touch with Andrew here on the forum.  He has a large clue bag on your type of ride and suitable mods.

Sorry,

Andrew = Libbybapa
Dave = 635Racer
Foxracer was also interested in the 1.7
I was too, but I am to far into my project to turn back now.

Other people have expressed interest in getting a 1.7 on here as well.
Perhaps you should post a feeler for a possible trade / sale in the for sale section.

It's not my hobby, it's my life . All the time in the shop is spent on my customer's cars. Unfortunately, i'm not so rich [yet] that i can others to do all my work, and i don't have the energy anymore to stay in the shop till midnight dicking around.

after lots of back and forth i will go the tdi route. i found an AHU for $300 without pump or turbo which is
fine since i now have a vanagon pump and 10mm head, quantum exhaust and someone i know thinks he has a turbo for me. it's all comeing together! of course i  now also have to look into changing my diff to match. anybody got a gas 5 speed to sell for parts?
