Reverse Idler in trans?
« on: January 05, 2008, 03:47:07 pm »
My 97 Jetta will not stay in reverse hardly anymore.  I have to hold it and even then it pops out.  It has been clicking very badly for about a year now.  Is there any way to change this idler without pulling the trans?  The rest of the trans works great.

Reverse Idler in trans?

If you have a linkage shift 020 trans, you will need to rebuild it. This is very common and if it has come to the point that you cannot move the car in reverse, then its possible that the mainshaft has been severely damaged and the 1st gear slider is also probably toast.

These trannys dont have reverse gear idlers. They are not synchronized for reverse.
