Is there a trick to installing a clutch without the special centering tool? I ordered the tool a few days ago, expecting it any day now, and was just informed that it is back ordered for several weeks. I want to get this thing on the road, but I'm not going to cut corners either. Advice needed.

Alright, thanks . I'll try the eyeball method. As long as the tranny engages, can I assume I got it right?

You should know sooner than that. If you get it off center, the bolt holes on the transmission won't line up and the bolts into the block won't fit.

Just center the disc in the opening in the flywheel. I use a stick or a socket or something to guage how far the center piece is from the opening and try to get an equal opening on all sides.

The little plastic alignment tools are everywhere, though. You shouldn't have to wait weeks to get one. Most clutch/pressure plate kits include one. If you talk to one of your local independent VW shops, they might loan or sell you one cheap.

Before I had one of those centering discs, I'd put a bic pen or 1/4" socket between the flywheel and clutch. Run it all the way around and move the disc till it's centered.
Make sure the metal pressure plate disc is centered too so the pushrod rides in the center of it.

One of the VW techs that I worked with used his finger to line it up. :roll:

If you were a perfectionist, couldnt you also stick an axle (splined side, obviously) in there to center it?
