1.9 TD real power
« on: December 25, 2007, 10:29:00 am »
What should I expect from a 1.9L TD (IDI) power wise?  If I fuel it up what sort of HP would I see?  Could I see 110+ HP with pump mods and intercooler?  180 lb/f torque?  Realalistic numbers not BS.

The AAZ is rated 78 HP by the manufacturer and I believe about 100 lbs/ft torque. I was told by the shop that modified my IP that I should expect a 20 HP gain. I am going to run an intercooler , performance air filter, as well as a larger exhaust line. My hope is to crank between 100 and 110 HP. But I may be BS myself. I would like to hear from others.

I dont think getting 180 ft lbs will be very feasible for a DD. Not to hard to acheive but also hard on the engine. I might also point out that my experience at this point pertains to my 5k lb Syncro vanagon with an AAZ.

1.6d converted to td:
boost pin reshaped,merc 220cdi intercooler,increased fuel in pump,merc dn261 nozzles,blocked WG with kkk24 running 30psi=136hp at the flywheel.
so you can see 110hp ate pretty easy to achieve.

Why so much boost? You could get that much power with half that boost. Itīs just stressing the motor

Ya I think 180f/lb is a bit high.  I would be more then happy with 140.  Thanks for the info so far...............

I think 140 ft/lbs would be easily obtainable. My AAZ is in a 4wd with losses of both an extra overdrive, transfer case and 32" tires. With the fuel not turned up much if any(previous owner said it was turned up a little) I dynoed at 80 hp and 122.5 ft/lbs.

Jimfoo, My plan is for putting a AAZ out of my 97 Jetta (1.9L K03 Turbo) into a 4X4 Toyota truck.  What is yours in?  I have been planing this for a while but I get some people saying it will be horribly under powered and others saying it will be fine (these guys have 1.6L in Samys).  I have a 22RE in the truck now and it is rated at 110hp and 140ft/lb (Peak HP is at 3800rpm, Peak torque is 3200rpm).  If I can match that then I would be more then happy.  I just don't want to dive into this without knowing what the end result is going to be.

PS sorry just read what you have it in................

The only problem I had was for some reason I never figured out my engine got really hot going up long hills/passes. It could have been my radiator was just a bit too small, thermostat or water pump problem, I never really found out. So I would have to go much slower up hills than I otherwise could have to try to keep the engine cool. My truck weighs 3500 lbs and my old gas engine had 42 hp@3500 and 83 ft/lbs@1500, so to me the power was great. I got close to 30 pg on the highway, but I'm shaped like a brick. I would thing a Toy would do a bit better, especially if the gearing is better, which I think it is. My truck has 4.7's so I'm doing about 3k rpm at 65. My AAZ's torque and HP peak was around 3500 rpm. If I didn't have the heat problem, I'm sure I could have turned the fuel up more and done even better., plus my radiator size was limited to about 18-20" width. You could probably fit a bigger one if you needed.

i have a 1.9 aaz TD engine and have upped the boost and added an intercooler from a Golf mk3 TDI and am now running at 100bhp (1.0bar boost). looking at adding a larger sharan intercooler on the front in the future - its sitting in the garage at the moment.
