Ok, newbie to the VeeDub scene, but I'm buying a '79 diesel rabbit tonight that's been sitting for four years (old man owner), aside from changing out the fluids, anything else I should do? It ran fine when parked, has about 170k, and the price - $300!!! I'll be brewing bio soon, what so i need to change in terms of hoses & gaskets?
And what is this "caddy" I keep hearing about?
Thanks!

Maybe change cam belt? Do you know when it was last done?
caddy = Rabbit pickup truck
Smoke 'em if you've got 'em!

Don't know about the cam belt - is it the king that can break without screwing up the valves?

HAHAHA! Just kidding- yeah, you'd be screwed if the belt broke. Take off the timing belt cover and inspect it, if it looks bad, dont plan on driving it too far. When I bought my scirocco, I drove it from where it was parked (and had been sitting for about two years) about 7 miles back to where I worked, and changed the belt- the old one was missing several teeth!!!
Dont even take that chance with a diesel, if it looks nasty, either tow it or change it on site. (not the easiest job!)
