PD 150 Turbo Upgrade
« on: December 10, 2007, 07:38:52 am »
Hi guys,

I've just bought a 150PD mk4 Golf. I pick it up next weekend and want to tune it straight away.

I'm not really interested in a re-map, without first upgrading the turbo.

I used the search function, but couldn't find anything on here.

Other than taking it to Jabba (upto 230bhp, 370 lbft) are there any other options for me?

What should I be changing on it to maximise power? I've heard conflicting stories from every forum!

Some say exhaust makes no difference, some say it does
Most say fmic intercooler does not need upgrading, Jabba imply it does on their site.
Clutch definately needs upgrading
What about the flywheel? is it not a dual mass - will it take the power upgrade? No one has even mentioned the flywheel.

I get the feeling that no-one really knows!

I'm happy to do the clutch, intercooler and exhaust myself, but the turbo-upgrade will really need to be done inhouse, along with the appropriate re-map, since this is going to be my daily driver and I need it back asap!

What do you suggest?

Many thanks,

Rich

you can probably squeeze that much power in stock form, but it won't do it as efficiently...

naturally when you want more power you look for larger exhaust, bigger FMIC, bigger turbo, etc.  they all have advantages and disadvantages though.

When I last bothered with uk-mkivs site, jabba were often accused of inflated figures.
You could quite easily spend a fortune at somewhere like allards, but personally i'd get a gt22/23v of some kind, a map from alligator and be done with it. Block off the egr and decat it, you'd definitely be looking at jabbas quoted power.
Valeo make a single mass replacement for the DMF, haven't heard any reports on them though. You'll definitely need a new clutch.

Where can you find the Valeo single mass setup? I had a GT2260V off of a BMW on my PD150 until recently (going through some revisions right now) and the power was definitely there.

I'll have a look for it, though its not advertised as a performance upgrade just a cheaper replacement for the DMF failure.

I think a t5 174bhp flywheel and clutch should be researched, my 130 t5 will not slip even with over 3ton gross and 6th gear/1000rpm.

Thanks for your answers, guys.

I decided on an Allard turbo, in the end. They seem to know what they are doing.

Thanks for all your help,

Rich
