Ignoring the turbo differences, are both engines equal in thier ability to produce horsepower? Or does the ALH have a stronger block/crank, better head etc.?

Is that a middle eastern block?

PS-I looked to see what I could find on google:not much. It is my understanding that the ALH is overall stronger. All I know is that it has been pushed the furthest by the guys on tdiclub.com and seems to be easier to make power with (probably in part to the computers, but if you take that out of the equation...who knows).

yes, that was my impression, but it would be nice to know for sure. I run an AHU in my syncro right now, with the ECU. I am going to try an M-TDI in my next project..so I have a choice of blocks. The AHU is cheaper to buy than the ALH. SO after we take away the ECU, VNT & pumps, what does the comparison look like?

Almost

Someone needs to sacrifice a couple to science and have the alloys analyised.

do higher breaking pressures really equate to better performance/economy though?
if the ALH came with 90 hp, and the AHU came with 90 hp, shouldn't the materials stay the same? of course they would beef up the 110 hp versions though...
i just hope my 1Z is good enough for 120-140 hp...!

AFAK the ALH is the same as the 110hp one in Europe, only difference is the nozzles and the tune...unless again I am out to lunch.

The debate on injection pressures is "out there". I don't think anyone has really established big performance differences between the two...however, it does play into atomization of the fuel, etc. in the end.
On the ALH vs. AHU/1z block differences... the differences are pretty well outlined in that thread you were linked to. I won't repeat myself here, but there were supposedly some improvements and reforcment ribbing added to the ALH blocks... but I haven't heard of too many 1z/AHU blocks going south...mainly issues with pistons cracking in either situation...more so with stock 1z pistons.

This must be your build on the TDI club
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=129127very nice!
I bought an ALH core today...I admit I am going to follow some of your stuff. I like what you did with the swaintech coatings and the machining. I also have a couple G60 1.8 here from my syncros, so am considering the intake idea as well. What are you running for boost & HP on that 1z?
