I'm replacing the stock oil return line on my 1.6TD. Does anyone know what thread / size the connection on the oil pan is?

It's Metric, and a very hard size to come by.  I took my pan to a major custom hose supplier, and they couldn't match it.  It was something like 23mm.  They had 22 and 24 in their catalogs, but no 23.  FYI, some pressure washers come with a brass fitting that uses the same size threads on one side.  It was just dumb luck that I discovered that.

I'm bringing this one back from the dead

I looked in the "all encompassing oil drain thread"
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=19623.75

some say it's a 23mm fitting
others say it's a DIN fitting available from gates
others mention a 7/8ths - 12? or 14? (or AN-10)

does anyone know what the oil pan return threads are?

sorry that should have read

7/8 - 12 jic

or

10-an diameter hose (5/8ths)

seeing as JIC and AN are... for the most part, interchangeable.... the threads dont even look like they'll match up on the pan spigot... but the diameter is right....

Would it be a DIN fitting as quoted here

I finally got some info after hours of pouring over hydraulic fittings websites namely http://www.discounthydraulichose.com/

I've made a few discoveries.

All the hydraulic style fittings on German vehicles are of the type "DIN" which stands for Deutsche Industrial Norm .. This is roughly equivalent to the us SAE

FYI DIN has a 24 degree flare face

Another twist is that DIN fittings come in 2 grades - heavy and light.
These 2 grades are known by the industry as FDINLX (light) and FDINHX (heavy).
This grade impacts the thickness of the hole through the fitting, heavy being smaller ID because the fitting is beefier.
*You have to be sure that your hose size is the same between both ends  when making a hose up from scratch.

Gates carries these fitting so your local parts store can probably get them but they charge a ton compared to the aforementioned website (almost 25 bucks / fitting at my local parts house).

A typical gates part for an 18mm female DIN to crimped hose
# is G25645 - 12 18

I've got a buddy that works at a hydraulic shop giving me a hand.
from looking at this catalogue
http://www.geeve.com/documentatie/Crimp_Fittings_48.pdf
it looks like it may be part number 1CA48-15-10
when I measured the threads on the pan they came out to a m22x1.5 so I figure either I'm spot on or pretty damn close.

I'll be sure to post the results...

so I've got results.
I've been told it's a "15L metric"
I dont have a model number or size, but hose outer diameter I'm using is 15mm, the hex nut is 22mm
