what is an easy way to tell if a car has a 1.6 hydro head or a mech head...im considering the 1.6/1.9 franken motor.
easy way is to notice an extra oil return galley between cylinder one and two. It is similar to the oil return between three and four but a little bit smaller.
I think you will need to look for a hydro block and not the head if you intend to build the 1.6/1.9 combo.

ok...but is that the easiest way to tell if i have a hydro engine or a mech engine.
yes. Yours should be hydro if its original. I have seen scarier things though. I have a rabbit truck at the shop right now and it should have a 1.6l in it but alas, it has a 1.5l.
86 is the change over year, it could be either
mechs are louder and have a little extra power. there might be a sticker somewhere on the car that says you need to adjust the valves every 15'000km or however many miles. if it doesn't have this it could have just worn off, but is probably hydro.
hydro pro's: no valve adjustment
hydro cons: sticky valve lifters
mech pro's: more power, no sticky valve lifters
mech cons: need to adjust valves on a regular basis.
i wonder if using really good oil could reduce the wear on the shims & cam... hmmm

im really hoping i have the hydro head....if i look on the car for when its made when did they go to the hydrolic head.
pre-?=mech
post-?=hydro
pre-86=mech
post-86=hydro
