are all a3 inboard cv joints larger than a2?
« on: November 11, 2007, 09:43:29 am »
Swapping my aaz into my eco. the engine came from a 94 a3. Almost finished. job going very well, until..... while installing the cv shafts I have discovered that the coupler on the trans is too large and my eco shafts just aren't large enough. can I have a3 inboards put onto my a2 shafts? I think they are the same length no? Any help is welcome. thanks

I believe I have it figured out. the local cv shop is swapping the end for me. I'm amazed that vw didn't change the length from an a2 to an a3, yet they changed the inboard diameter.

The CV flanges changed during the mk1 era from 190mm to 200mm. You could find mk2 axles and use them if this doesn't work. I think VW did it for strength purposes and had both the 190 and 200mm ones up until the end of the mk2 era. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not positive.

You know a whole lot more than I, but are
you sure you don't mean 90mm to 100mm
axle flanges?

200mm axle flanges would surely be the
size of dinner plates.

Yep got er fixed up today. the guy rebuilt my cv and replaced the inboard with the larger one. 90$ and had it done in 45 minutes. The only issue I had installing it (the drivers side) was the larger diameter wouldn't clear the trans for install. I loosened the rear motor mount and jacked up the engine a bit. and tadaaaa! everything thing else I hope goes as planned, should have it running tonight. thanks everyone.

i bought some 100mm axles and they were about an inch and a half longer (the 100mm flange on the tranny sticks out too)

so i just swapped the 90mm flanges on the tranny and hopefully i'll be ok.

fired up the aaz last night. went for a short drive. The a3 axles are too long, I had only used the passenger side one. It is binding up pretty bad. taking my old shaft in and getting it rebuilt with the new 100 mm end. then I should be good. I just can't believe how good this engine sounds.

My '91 Golf has 100mm axles.
Some of the later A2s had them.

It's been awhile since I played with them but it seems like the ends should slide onto your A2 axles.

The larger inboard joints do install directly onto my shafts. I had the shop do it, because they had the parts in stock and with the axles out I figured getting them rebuilt guarantees me years of trouble free service. The car is running great and I can't believe the difference between the 1.9 and the 1.6 eco. I can't believe we were not given this engine in the states! I'm loving my a2!
