Sorry dude.. my console is out and there's nothing written anywhere... but I'm very interested if someone else knows the answer.

The Bentley always says silly things like "Setting #3 on special tool 12345" which is just a variable resistor... tell us the darn values !!!!

Mine is out too and there is no writing on the console or anything behind it, I'd test mine for you but, I already put the tank back in the car.

I don't believe it is written anywhere actually... one of the mysteries of the beast.

Found this on the bentley forum from a couple of years ago

Quote
I have a 96 Jetta GL, 2.0, (ABA?) GAS.

My tank was at 3/8 this morning, and I measured across pins 2 & 3 right at the harness for the gas tank and I got 110 ohms. I went and filled up the car, and I read 36 ohms.
Note: I'm measuring with the connector disconnected, and on the tank side.

My gauge works great, so hopefully you'll get something in the same range.
3/8 = 110 ohms
full = 36 ohms

It's for a gas model however, don't know if they're the same values as yours.

I remember reading a post or a link on Bentley about building that special tool for senders and gauges and it gives you all the resistance values. It was on the A2 forum. Couldn't find it quickly just now. You may have time to find it before you freeze over! If I can find it later i'll post it here.

Tis easy... a 100 ohm potentiometer from Radio Shack or the like and a reasonably accurate digital ohmmeter with a low scale (say 0-200 ohms) and you're good to go.

You could be *really* fancy and put it in a box with a knob and alligator clips....  you could even calibrate the knob to the "VW 1301 settings" with the ohmmeter.   Sell it on eBay for half of the price for the special tool... be rich beyond your wildest dreams... buy more diesels.  ;-)
