just picked up a vnt-15 turbo off an 02 beetle from a buddy. with like 35k miles on it.
Anyways from searching ive done it looks like setting up a controller for the vanes is a kind of a pain in the ass. And altho ive read through quite a few threads.. i dont quite understand limiting the boost of them. i understand the opening of the vanes to ither stop the building of boost or to stabilize it..?
sorry definitely not a turbo guru when it comes to diesels still so much to learn, and ide never even looked into these turbos with opening and closing vanes before until i brought this little guy home last night.
I guess im wondering if its worth going through all the trouble of setting up a controller of sorts.. or if ide be better off sourcing a regular turbo.
this would be going on a 1.6 n/a with a td pump and through a small intercooler. Ive no intent to run big boost.. or a big turbo i just want to add that bit of pep to the diesel for hills and getting on the freeway and such.

If you don't limit the boost it will act like a small turbo with a stuck wastegate, it will overboost and blow stuff up eventually.
That's the point of the VNT, it can act like a small turbo at low rpms and a larger one at high rpms.

right i understand that, i just need to find more info on these things.
the more i read the cooler they sound and less of a PITA a vane controller seems.
Named Tintin, Libbybapa and I all have different versions of controllers for them, and all seem to work well. Just do a search, and you should find details on all of them.

I'd also recommend looking up the differences between the n/a engine and the turbo engine before you make up your mind fully on a game plan.
Yes all the parts will bolt on, but there are quite a few differences between the engines (in particular the block) which help the engine deal with the increased heat and pressures caused by a turbo.
Just be a shame to go to a lot of work on a controller only to have the engine go boom down the road a ways !!

yeah, i know an n/a and turbo block/head differ.
but i really have no plans on super huge amounts of boost.
im looking at getting a whole td setup.. eventually.
its all just ideas right now anyways.. always try to gather as much info as possible before i actually jump in.
