92 Jetta, what number is on the fan relay?

Just had to put a waterpump in a 1.6td because I (and the previous owner) broke the housing at the themostat. ar was running too cool. PO put a bolt through and a nut on one of the two bolts, cracked housing. I couldn't put it back together without leaks.
Put a complete waterpump on that I know has only about 15,000 -20,000 km.
Car heats now, too warm and fan doesn't kick in. No power getting to fan with temp at 3/4 on guage.

going back out to pull wires at fanstat and check, but what number is the relay  if I find no pwer at the switch? Fuse is fine.

You need to check and see if you have power to the fan.  Remove the connection on the radiator at the temp switch, (below the battery)

One is a ground, one is low speed one is high.  Get a test light out and check for power.  If you have power then cross one to another check the fan motor see if you have power there.

You can check the fuse at the fuse box to see if that 25 or 30amp fuse is blown

if you need a motor, let me know I have a new one setting on the shelf

Read my posts again please. Fuse is good, no power to the fan stat. Is there a relay in the circuit? Or am I looking for something that got knocked apart while I was doing all this underhood work?

Fan also won't run with power direct to fan.  Did the fan motor burn out and fry a relay?  Another fuse or fusible link somewhere? Bad ground? I'm grabbing at straws..............

there is a relay on the firewall behind the reservoir, however unplug the connection at the thermo switch at the bottom of the rad. use a jumper wire ( about 14 ga. cause it can get hot ) and short the terminals center to left and then center to right. one side is hi speed the other is low speed.if the fan does not respond listen or feel for a click at the relay. if you get nothing at all start checking the wiring in between. the guys on this forum just helped me through all of my trial and error. with this same thing, they are great diagnostitions. dont be afraid to ask questions even if you think you sound dumb. good luck.

Found lots of problems today.Lots of corroded connectors, and a fried fan. Put in a new (used) fan from stock, cut out a bunch of corroded stuff, including a plug for a relay.Ran power straight to the fanstat, it goes right to the resistor for the low speed fan. The high speed went to the relay, I think for the air conditioning override which has been eliminated anyway. Pretty sure I need a new fan switch. Anyone know if it will take the load of running the fan on high, or does it have to run the relay to run the fan? Don't want to burn out a new swtch when I put it in! Rather not deal with a relay if I don't have to.

I am having similar troubles with my 1.9TD



I also had many corroded and broken connectors, especially the hot wire (red) to the rad temp switch.  I crimped on new connectors and bypassed the plugs.  It seems that this group[ of wires are in a poor location, especially for salty Canadian winters.  I might try to shield all that wiring from road spray.

I'd be happy to delete the relay as My AC is non-functional anyway and the big fuse on top is blown.  So... does anyone know?

the fan wasn't designed to run at max for extended periods...  that will just kill your fan even faster.  i rigged mine up with a resistor for the a/c and all other speeds work flawlessly.

the common problem area is under the hood at the relay there. it gets all corroded.
