mine is a mk1, i did pull that plug out of the heater box like you said, had two 6mm screws holding it in place, wasn't sure what it was, has a few wires going around in screw patterns, it did look like it was bad, had some black soot deposits around it

Anyway, you can't really 'See' to tell if a reistor is bad: you need to follow the test procedures in the Bentley.

I'd say that your relay (mounted to the driver's side of the heater box) is bad. You can probably try any generic 4-terminal relay to see if it solves the problem.

I had a working MK setup, but the heater core blew. I replaced the whole box just so I didn't have to fool with splitting the case. When I reinstalled, the blower only worked on high. So, I tried replacing all the other parts off the original box. The relay solved the problem.
