Hello i have a 1996 model golf (mk3) 1.9 Tdi and have been looking into getting a tuning box for it.
One on ebay claims bhp up to 110 from 90 and its only around £30.
Is there any danger from using one of these 'plug and play' tuning boxes? engine trouble/damage etc?

more soot being put in your engine/oil. less fuel economy, and probably more emissions.
more soot in oil means more wear on the motor, so more frequent oil changes or adding a good bypass filter such as amsoil or fs-2500.
redbaron buy some nozzles instead, they add fuel properly. I just bought a set from a member on here and the power is the same as a tuning box but with less smoke, and only cost about £50.
Its obviously much more work to install, but not difficult
i have a brand new set of basio sprint 216 for sale for 200cnd, not sure what that is in pounds.
they have never been installed.
reason for sale is because i prepurchase a whole bunch of mods for my second tdi of which i did not purchase yet because my veggie AAZ is still going strong and i also read that a modified tdi is not a good thing. i also have an 11mm head if interested.

Why wouldn't a modified TDI be a good thing?
this is what my first tdi has:
2002 Jetta: Radman skid plate, Radman SS, TT shifter, DSS stage 2 (.240) nozzles , Amazing DI Map, OMI, H&R springs, TT bushings, Koni Yellow, 28mm Neuspeed RSB, venterectomy, Fuel cooler, large top IC tube, boostvalve, G60/VR6, ARP headstuds
but
my priority was to modify my NEXT tdi and use vegetable oil as much as possible. the problem is that a modified tdi is not good on the engine.
not sure if i will add the 11mm head to the present TDi or not , i guess it depends if i sell it or not.
but at this point i have the Basio Sprint 216's (brand new still in original package and wax paper) and 11mm head.
Veggie isn't good for your engine either though it's possible it could be worse on your engine with mods. That's personal preference though.

i think i have a great setup,
aluminum tank with the heater outside the tank so no contamination there, Vegmax filter (no prestone contamination possible either), fphe, vegtherm and injection line heaters. overall there no place where oil temp can be lost or contaminated. i switch when the engine is hot and i filter to below 1micron by using a centrifuge filter. no suspended water in oil eihter when doing the hotpan test.
i collect oil only from one place and i pump it out from inside the restaurant - no dumpster diving and risk getting water in oil.
if you can help me out if you something wrong with my setup can u PLEASE point it out. but so far in the past 2 years i have had no problems but anything can happen.
