Turbo for Audi 5 cyl
« on: September 12, 2007, 03:56:45 pm »
Searching through the archives, it seems that most agree that the K26 is a little too large for the 1.6l, but I am finally starting on my project of removing the engine from the type 43 5000 with a K24 and putting it in a 1986 5000 Turbo Quattro.  It looks like the intake and exhaust manifold off the gasser would bolt up to the diesel head.  If that were the case this engine would have a K26 water cooled turbo with an external wastegate. What's your opinion on how this would affect the performance of a 5 cylinder turbo diesel?

Hey, your making my dream a reality!  I've always wanted to put a TD in a Quattro.  That is a great question about the K26.  If you retain the stock intercooling on the quattro, you'll probably want to put more boost through the engine than the K24 was capable of anyway.  I know it's not a very scientific answer, but I think you should just try it and see.

I think the K26 is a bit too big for the diesel, it will take many seconds to spool up and develop any power, just like the gas engine (no boost before 2500rpms in a gas means even worse in the diesel). The k24 is even a bit big by modern standards...

Well Im building a hybrid k24 hot with a K26 Cold. I figured since the car came with a k24 it should spool the same as factory...just with more volume. :D

K26 will work juuussst fine.  Just add a hobbs switch, (and propane fumigation or nitro) and  nozzles x 4 to the intake manifold.  That may help a wee bit :D

The external wastegate in the gasser has a 1.2 bar spring.  If my calculations are correct this would be about 18 psi.  I like the response of the turbo in my other gas Quattro, but I did install a chip and a 1.8 bar wastegate spring.  I don't want a 3 or 4 second turbo lag, but I could live with a one second lag.

When I switched from K26 to  K24  on my 86 5K Quattro I noticed that the spool-up on the K24 was waay better. 3" down-pipe and exhaust was the same. If I recall the K24 has a smaller exhaust side but a slightly bigger intake side, I was told it will suport about 23lbs of boost. If you can find the waste-gate off an 84 TQ it has an adjustible top. I don't know if the cam profiles are different from turbo gas to turbo diesel (food for thought).
Good Luck.
