I suspect a bad motor mount. I have a less than a year old front mount but what about the others? Where are they and how involved is it to replace them? I'm pretty sure thats what it is, if I am driving along and let off the accelerator and quickly step on it it "clunks" and I don't like it. I can drive smoothly but i know its not right and would like to fix it. Thanks for your opinions as always they are very appreciated and helpful.

In the past when this happened to me it turned out that the bushes on the lower arms had rotted away. As i slowed down then sped up again it meant the lower arms rocked back and forth causing the clunking sound. Driving around slowly braking/accelerating it wouldnt rock.
Not saying this is the case for you but thought i'd mention it as i first thought it was an engine mount problem.

I had the exact same symptoms and it was a bad upper strut mount. When your engine is cold and not running grab the vavle cover and give it a good shaking. If it's moving excessivly then it's an engine mount. You can usually tell which one it is as well. There is the front one and then one in both rear corners of the engine/tranny assuming this is a mk2/mk3

best way to check engine mounts, is to stick the car in gear (not 1st because of the lock) and rock it. keep an eye on the mounts. going in reverse will show you a bad front mount, and going forward will show you a bad rear mount. be sure to do this on flat ground and maybe with someone ready to step on the brakes... i would suspect a rear engine mount. but it all depends on how badly it clunks... could be bushings too.
my car would clunk so bad in reverse... i had a bad front mount. switch to solid mount and no more problem!

Did you notice any appreciable increase
in vibration with the solid front motor mount?

not really... then again i don't use reverse too often. all i remember was that it was like night and day from a broken mount to a solid mount.
as for the rear mount, i dont think you can get a solid one... come to think of it, my car clunked bad when i let off the pedal too... because the engine was essentially pulling on the front mount when the load was decreased enough. accelerating was fine.
