Instrument cluster interchangability?
« on: September 01, 2007, 10:50:07 am »
Currently driving a '91 Golf (mexican). No tach on the cluster.

On the shelf clusters with tachs(all Jetta's)
'84 diesel (german)
'87 diesel (german)

In car clusters (Jetta's)
'85 diesel (german)
'92 diesel (german)
Not sure if I'm fixing or parting the '92 Jetta, high miles but the engine was a factory reman, broke a timing belt....

I've messed with them enough to know that there's different plugs on the back of the cluster, for instance the mk1/mk2 that I have on the shelf are different. Don't want to pull the Golf apart if it's a lost cause, thought someone here might know!

I believe only the 92 one will work. Do you have any pictures of the 84?

No, but I can tell you it's got two plugs on the bottom.......
Not real high miles either if I remember right. Car had been beat up pretty bad when I got it, just a parts car. Too bad too, there was NO rust on the car. Lots of dings, dents, busted windows, rips, etc, etc, etc........

Wound up using the engine, ran great (until  a precup came loose and did a dance between the piston and the head!) that it was bored oversize. Was a good running mf cade engine, probably not original in the '84.....
