That big green one next to the house, you should paint on some eye brows and a nose.

lol? rofl! i see it!!im thinkin groucho marx
sounds like a nice setup,quicktd
i like 1800 rpm units personally
today i went to a "different " place, where time has seen to forgotton, and lots of "leftovers" abound
i didnt see these guys around,i wonder where they were.....

all i saw was rastaman

and a retired hippie

after all that fun and jazz in downtown woodstock...(did he say woodstock man?)   i had to go to work

one of my jobs was to install a light on a generator

dont laugh,its important!!
now the customer can "see" a fault instead of an annunciator panel being used
i knew the silly honduh boyz were good for something,12v strobes from "any" auto parts store
i still feel that the disco strobes are rather controversal in a place like woodstock though

Throttle cables ftw

cool stuff, it must be interesting to go to all these random backyards of the hudson valley. I used to deliver high end architectural concrete forms on a flatbed truck to building sites all around this area and saw some mega-mansions, and yes, they all had generators. mice got into my rabbit out in the garage, tore up all the underhood insulation and made a nest of it near the blower motor. what a mess. nuts and twigs and *** in every crevice of the engine bay.

Here's some pics of my generator,

All "prettied" up. It's now a "potting table" according to the missus...

Guts,

Simplified "women friendly" controls,

And the breaker interlock,

The Yanmar diesel was set up to govern at 2600rpm when it powered the reefer unit, some (ok, much) screwing around with the governor springs has it running 64hz no load to ~58hz full load. As good as I can get it without it becoming unstable and "hunting". Heavier governor weights might get it better but it works fine and I'm tired of playing with it. It pulls the electric water heater and the central air combined just fine, what more can you ask for?

Anyone have any photo's of one built with a 1.6?
2009 Jetta TDI Loyal edition, 6-spd. 16V 2.0CR

1985 VW Golf 5-spd, 4-door, 1.6NA  Bought from orig. owner in Savannah with 42,000 miles.
"Making the jump NA to TD" slow but sure.

1980 VW Rabbit LS 5-spd, 4-door 1.6NA almost 450,000miles  RIP

I've seen a few built with 1.6 and 2.4 (6cyl) vw diesels. There were a bunch of cabinet mounted generators on the surplus market a few years ago. The engine was mounted vertically with the generator hung off the bottom. They were all 3600rpm units. I'm guessing they were out of telecom sites, judging by the way they were packaged. I don't suspect the 1.6 would really make much power at 1800rpm, maybe 10-12kw, but when wound up to 3600 they would make good power, if you can handle the noise...

Don't take this the wrong way, I like VW diesels, but there are lots of better engines for generators out there. Thermo-king or carrier reefer units have yanmar's, kubota's and isuzu's, the direct injection isuzu's are really nice. All the reefer engines are tuned for low rpm power, have proper governors and make excellent generator engines. They are also plentiful and cheap, if you know where to shop... The VW makes its best power at high rpm, which doesn't make for the best generator and the pump isn't really set up for constant speed governor operation, you would need to change a few internal parts to make it work properly.

i  think its a very cool job aidan,,i hope you like it
sometimes you have to be like macgyver+fix something with nothing, just to get it online quickly
think :rocks+twigs+shoelaces+zipties+duct tape :o
nice setup,quicktd
ill have to get pics of my "portable" 15kw kohler(yanmar 4 cyl diesel powered,1800rpm),mounted on a trailer for "portability"
my dad built an airplane hangar with it,it was funny to see him runnin that "big diesel" and runnin a 3/8 drill off of it  just a little overkill

heres more pics
broken exhaust pipe, lucky it didnt start a fire

oops

i could smell it as i got close to the unit, the burnt electrical smell
stick a fork in it

spotted before the kingston bridge

something new i am trying,a combo of .025 aircraft aluminum and/or silicone+3m weatherstrip adhesive

gotta make these in 2 pieces

i got  on site and batt volts were 12.6,traced it  to a faulty fuse holder, see the volts now.. gotta have a fluke or yer gettin nowhere fast

heres another mouseproofing attempt

installed, took about 10 mins to fab up

maybe i should prepaint a piece of tin for these to blend in a little

this is windham ski slope, you may be able to see the ski lift in the pic, sort of at the end/bottom of the driveway
representin the CO. again,yoe!!

Yeah its going well, 99% of the work is for Tesco though rather than small private work.

Van turned out to be an 07 VW T5, 2.5 PD 130bhp. They have a fleet of them, and I was shocked to learn they top up the oil on them with the stuff they buy in for the generators!!

i mean,oil is oil,right?
anyways,I got some more pics fer ya...
yea i was in woodstock AGAIN,and seen this guy.....

then i fixed on a generator

hey, when in woodstock, try to be one with nature, and use natures surroundings to make your generator one with the earth, budda sez....
see the  natural conduit support?yea,nature... man.....peace...lol

we try to clean them up as best as we can,so maybe someone will notice that someone was there

this was in stormville
before...

after...i still hates meeces to pieces

over in saugerties
how about a little weedwacking? its not too bad though

so i put on some tin for rodent control(again)

then i went thru the jungle to do a transfer test

cruise on up to hudson for more fun
this generator right here is my game, nice 200 kw with a 6081 deere
finally! a diesel! i felt right at home, ill service these all day
yea thats right ... a 200 kw at a "house",and a 1000 amp(i think it was 1000 amp) transfer switch

nice little grass strip airport on the way outta town, yea im "parked" on the runway!!!lol

back on down to red hook/rhinebeck area
i saw lots of nice cars cruisin 9,it was the weekend of the goodguys meet@ the dutchess county fairgrounds(sorry they went too fast to get good pics)
yucky, look at that dirt(and open holes in the skid)

aah thats better(plugged off the holes too)

i always keep my extra  dirt+ grass clippings around my generator

heres a bunch more
im in the jungle baby

its in there somewhere

stupid hill with stupid woodchips

thats a lil' betta

stupid meeces chewed thru the hose for the coolant overflow bottle witch sits in the rear of the enclosure at a low point, there was a puddle under it when i got there
i hope the mices drank the antifreezes
heres how i fixed on it

too bad it was so hazy..
near CR 3 and rt 22 in columbia county..

dig this man....
a 100 kw katolight powered by a lp fueled turbocharged 460 ford
great setup
when they used these engines on kohlers 100 kw unit, the engine was rated@ 160 hp@ 1800

not too bad
needed some tlc before winter(hoses+a new block heater)

i felt silly here
for the life of me,i couldnt find this generator!!
the directions were good, but i just couldnt see it!!
the driveway is 30 feet on the other side...
i went thru a (cut already)corn field to get to it..i drove past it 2 times before i came walking thru from the driveway and spotted the meter  with the switch on the backside
after 20 mins i found it

this is a oldie but goodie!!
an old school ac delco generator with a 2 stroke detroit for power
its like a 25 kw
detroits sound soooooooo minty cool

look , its older than me(im thinkin late 60's)and it has orig. hoses+belts!!!
wow that makes it a museum piece that should be preserved in  a glass case

its gonna be fun replacing those hoses, they are hard as rocks
these lil float switches are cool..
if you remove the  E clip on the end+turn the float over, they will change their  signal for what you need(normally open,or normally closed)

i drove past real slow ,and it looks clean!!
better check under it though
then put a vw td engine in it to make it right

thru the jungle again

heres a lil before+after
before

after
they are so small, its easy to spruce them up...have a  little pride

heres a medium/large unit...around a 600 kw i think...
im pretty sure an engine tag had a rating of 750 hp@ 1800 rpm

they wanna get it  working...
a shot of the control panel

and you guys complain about a couple of wires in your car

big ol' Scatterpillar

first thing i would do is try to bar the engine over,or else we may have to hand these out for prizes

Thanks for the pics from Windham... relatives of mine built their retirement home not far from there on 5 acres back in the early 90s and we visited regulary. There's just something about the drive up 23 on a clear day (pref without the Troopers camping out) or 23A if you're looking for a driver's road... or even Platt Clove Rd for a REAL gut check. Biking in the summer, skiing in the winter...

Back on topic with the gen repair... I'll try to get pics of the generators at school. They have 3 or 4 massive Turbo Diesels waiting to kick in at any moment.

just waste a nice saturday just cruising around(after i fix my bent valve situation)
we just got an old school delco gen in the shop, its got an inline 6-71 detroit
cant wait to fix the problems+hear it roar, maybe ill try takin a video clip
nothin beats the sound of a detroit 2 stroke

these next couple of pics remind me of the south park episode where the kids go to a veal farm and all cartman can say is how delicious the little veals look

hey you look yummy....with some baked potatoes and green beans on the side :P

these pics were near my house

has anyone ever seen that old safety film/movie called "shaking hands with danger"???
one line i remember from the theme song: shaking hands with danger, just got 3 fingers left
its like wheres waldo, find the safety violations

this is the second one of these ive dealt with
mud wasps like to plug the vent for the gas regulator
there are 2 vents,and if 1 plugs,it runs rough
if both get plugged it wont even run
remove it and scrape out the dirt

thats what it looked like when i got there

and when i left

im surprised it worked,it was like 7 years since its last service
the block heater worked, and it started+ran fine

cool to see all your pics, You should have called me that day you passed through New Paltz. Funny that you saw my truck (oil cooler is being replaced). Liked the pics of the mouse by the spark plug, and the one of the car under the deck on that house (was that a Ford Fiesta/Festiva? Tail lights made me think it wasn't a Rabbit) Cheers!
