would be nice to own a beamer diesel... the only thing i would be worried about is parts availability and cost.  you just can't beat the availability of vw parts and pricing.

good luck on the project!

Thanks :)  I think parts will be ok, I've looked online and it uses the same bits as the 325 etc chassis so not too bad at all.  Some of the diesel bits aren't really cheap, but it will be a second car.

This engine was also used in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Mark_VII that ugly thing so I could get parts for the engine from BMW/Ford in theory.  I have already found that it will cost about $250 for the timing belt, idler and waterpump so not too bad on that front.  Some things like air filters are cheaper than for the golf :)

My main concern for now is the pump leaking/turbo eating itself after the body is done and it is safetied.  If it needs it a giles pump would have to be done for sure.  No rush though, one step at a time and see where this goes, it might not be worth it and be better to abort after my friend starts tearing into it.  We will have to see.

If you are looking I spotted another one on kijiji.ca in my area with similar damage aparently but it is a 524td and an auto so it would likely only get around 38-40imp mpg at best.  No price just an "obo"

ford uses inline pumps on some models, but i assume this car uses the rotary pump correct??

man... i'm starting to like inline pumps better.  the merc pumps don't seem to be much affected by ULSD as our VE pumps :(

i wouldn't mind driving a big honkin beemer if i was rolling with veg.  that stuff is so abundant it is ridiculous!  just need time to grab it and a place to store it.

Yeah, I have plenty of time, but I don't think the military housing folks would like me storing 45gal drums of it out by the shed :D

Wow is it a 4 or 6 cyl. Body parts and such should be a breeze to get as there are millions of 3 series Bimmers around . With 190k on it should be good for  a long time. Very cool I'm quite envious. Good luck Dan

It is a 6cyl 2.4L only 115hp though.  My friend wants to crank up the fuel and boost on it already!

It is a rotary pump, Chris says it looks the same as the volvo 6cyl pump.

Ok bought the car :)  Price was fairly reasonable after tax so hopefully another 2k-2.5k invested and I'll be under budget w00t!

Thank you Chris for you hard work, and the work yet to be done!

You will, my friend will be getting it moved to his house so he can do more work to it in his off hours, he'll be taking lots of pics for me.  He lives about 2.5hrs away so it won't be everyday I get to go help :(

Congrats on the purchase!

Can't wait to see the progress on this car (and a couple of Caddys that are in the works).

I agree. Unfortunately, due to a tight budget, the only project I'm going to undertake on my car anytime soon is a new paint job. Doing it myself to save some cash for some "new to me" wheels.

yes Budgets suck.  For now I think the BMW will be a summer only car, so it probably won't hit the roads this year.  Although my freind says he should be able to have the welding all done in a week of evenings when we get the other bits aquired.  anybody know of a good shock/strut?  I don't want to lower this thing and would liek the classic firm/sprty feeling I recall from the 325 (even though the front will wiegh about 150lbs more on this one!)

I have them in the Golf and I like them, so maybe I'll try that route on the second car too.  Firm but not too firm.
